Start with accounts connected to money, identity, health care, and essential services. Then work through subscriptions and everyday deliveries. USPS forwarding provides a useful bridge, but USPS says you remain responsible for notifying senders directly.

Use the timing below as a planning guide. An agency deadline, election deadline, policy condition, or provider instruction takes priority over this suggested schedule.

Before your moving date is fixed: build an address inventory

Create one private list of organizations that hold your address. Look through recent bank transactions, account emails, paper mail, recurring orders, and your password manager's account list. Annual renewals can be easy to overlook, so include insurance, professional memberships, and subscriptions that do not bill monthly.

List accounts separately even when the companies share a parent brand. Your checking account, credit card, mortgage, and investment account may have different profile settings. Give each adult responsibility for their own records, then assign shared household accounts to one person.

Record these fields:

  • Organization and account label, without putting full account numbers in a shared checklist.
  • Address type: residence, mailing, billing, service, delivery, or vehicle location.
  • Person responsible and target completion date.
  • Requested effective date and actual submission date.
  • Confirmation reference, saved receipt location, and follow-up date.

Keep identity documents, passwords, and sensitive numbers in your usual secure storage. The checklist only needs enough information to track the task.

Confirm the full new address

Check the street address, apartment or unit number, city, state, and ZIP Code against the lease, purchase documents, and building instructions. Confirm whether the unit has a separate mailing address, a shared mailroom, or a package locker process.

Ask when you can start receiving mail and packages. Getting keys does not necessarily mean a building can accept an early furniture delivery. If your move includes temporary housing, record the temporary mailing arrangement separately from your eventual permanent address.

Look up state requirements early

Use USAGov's state motor vehicle directory to reach your official agency. Find the rules for a move within your state or a move from another state, whichever applies. Check the driver's license or state ID process and the vehicle title and registration process separately.

Also open Vote.gov's state selector if you are eligible to vote. Registration deadlines vary. An approaching election deserves attention now, even if most of your boxes are still empty.

Two to four weeks before moving: schedule the essential changes

Once your address and move date are confirmed, contact services that need booking time or a future effective date. Ask whether a change can be scheduled or must be submitted after you move.

Arrange USPS forwarding through the official process

Start at the official USPS forwarding page. Submit the appropriate request and complete identity verification. USPS currently advises allowing at least seven to ten business days after approval for the request to take effect. If online verification is unsuccessful, follow USPS instructions for completing verification at a Post Office.

Use USPS directly rather than paying an unfamiliar intermediary. Check any current charge on the official site before submitting payment. Save your confirmation code privately.

Forwarding has limits: mail treatment depends on its class and sender instructions. Do not rely on it for important identity, financial, or medical documents. Contact those senders yourself.

Utilities, internet, and home services

Arrange electricity, gas, water, sewer, trash, internet, and any other service you manage. Ask the landlord or property manager which accounts are your responsibility before placing orders.

For each provider, confirm:

  • The final service date at the old home and start date at the new one.
  • Whether an appointment or access to equipment is needed.
  • Any deposit, installation charge, equipment return, or final bill.
  • The address where the final statement or refund will go.

Keep written confirmation. Consider a short service overlap if it supports cleaning or moving, and include its cost in your budget. The moving cost estimator can help you plan the broader move, while your provider quotes supply the actual service charges.

Insurance providers

Contact your auto, renters or homeowners, health, life, and other relevant insurers. Give the correct move date and ask how the new address affects your policy. For auto coverage, confirm the location where the vehicle will normally be kept. For renters or homeowners coverage, ask how coverage applies while belongings are moving and when the new home becomes covered.

Do not assume that changing a mailing address also changes the insured property or service area. Obtain confirmation of the coverage arrangement before relying on it. If you are crossing state lines, add insurance and vehicle administration to the items you review alongside moving out of state costs.

Employers, payroll, and financial accounts

Tell your employer or payroll team your new home and mailing addresses. Ask whether HR, payroll, benefits, retirement plans, and tax document delivery use separate systems. If you work remotely and are changing states, raise the location change with your employer before the move so they can explain the applicable process.

Update banks, credit cards, credit unions, investment providers, retirement accounts, student loans, auto loans, mortgages, and other lenders. Check both contact details and billing settings. Review joint accounts with the other account holder.

Use a known app or website, or contact the organization through details you already trust. Keep your usual payment reminders active while statements and notifications are changing.

Government records: decide which updates apply to you

USAGov's address change guide is a useful starting point for federal and state services. Work through the records you actually have. These agencies do not all share one address database.

IRS and tax records

The IRS explains several address change methods, including Form 8822, a new address on a tax return, a signed written statement, or identity-verified oral notification. Choose the method appropriate to your situation and follow its instructions.

The IRS says you should still notify it even after submitting a USPS change. Its guidance says processing can generally take four to six weeks after receipt, so record a follow-up date. If you have business tax records, review Form 8822-B separately. Check your state tax agency's instructions too, especially after an interstate move.

Social Security and Medicare

This task depends on your benefits. SSA says you do not need to update your address with it if you do not receive Social Security benefits, SSI, or Medicare.

People receiving Social Security benefits or enrolled in Medicare can generally update a U.S. mailing address through a personal my Social Security account. SSI recipients need to follow SSA's phone or office process for an address change.

Medicare directs people to Social Security to change their official Medicare address, including people who have Medicare without receiving Social Security benefits. Separately ask your health or drug plan about a move and any coverage or network questions.

VA benefits, if applicable

Updating your VA.gov profile covers several VA services, but not every department. VA identifies home loan benefits, life insurance, CHAMPVA, and the Foreign Medical Program as services requiring direct contact with the relevant department. List each applicable service in your inventory rather than closing every VA task after one profile update.

USCIS, if applicable

If you have immigration records or an immigration-related reporting obligation, read the USCIS address change instructions early. USCIS says most noncitizens must report a change within ten days of moving, with exceptions and special procedures for some circumstances. Check the current instructions for your status rather than assuming the rule applies identically to everyone.

Follow the instructions for your circumstances, including pending cases and receipt numbers where required. A USPS change does not update USCIS, and USCIS says USPS will not forward its mail. Do not postpone this task until forwarded letters arrive.

The final week and moving day: prevent deliveries to the wrong home

Review every open order and recurring shipment. Updating your account's default address may leave an existing order unchanged. Check the delivery address on each order itself and contact the merchant promptly if it is wrong.

Work through grocery delivery, meal kits, pet food, household supplies, retail accounts, payment wallets, and marketplace profiles. Remove or clearly relabel old saved addresses. Check gifts and orders placed by someone else for you.

Notify doctors, dentists, therapists, pharmacies, medical equipment suppliers, and other providers you use. Confirm any medication delivery scheduled around moving day. Ask about prescription transfers, record transfers, and appointments if you are changing providers.

Tell schools, childcare providers, colleges, and student services. Ask which enrollment, transport, billing, or emergency contact records need updating. For a new rental, use the first apartment move-in checklist to coordinate address administration with keys, utilities, and the condition check.

Keep your address inventory and essential contact details accessible during the move. The first-night box checklist is a separate email signup resource for planning what to keep close on arrival.

After moving: complete state records and verify the changes

Follow the deadlines and steps on your state's official pages for your driver's license or state ID. Then verify each vehicle's title and registration records separately, including any leased or financed vehicle instructions. A single profile change may not cover every record: California DMV, for example, explicitly distinguishes license and vehicle updates. Use your own state's requirements and confirmation process.

If eligible, update voter registration or register in your new state through the route provided by Vote.gov. Check your registration status afterward. Do not treat a USPS forwarding confirmation as voter registration confirmation.

Finish the lower-frequency addresses to change when moving: professional licensing boards, business registrations, unions, alumni associations, gyms, clubs, libraries, charities, magazines, and other subscriptions. Notify friends and family through your preferred private channel.

Turn submissions into confirmed updates

Here is a fictional example for a November 20 move. These are household planning targets, not legal deadlines.

Task and Owner, Due date, Effective date or next check, Evidence
Task Owner Due date Effective date or next check Evidence
Confirm apartment number with manager Jordan November 2 Before submitting changes Saved written confirmation
Arrange electric service Alex November 5 Start November 20 Provider confirmation
Update bank address Jordan November 20 Check profile November 21 Secure account record
Review vehicle registration process Alex November 2 State deadline recorded separately Official agency instructions
Check pending pharmacy delivery Jordan November 16 Delivery after arrival Pharmacy confirmation

Use “submitted,” “confirmed,” and “needs follow-up” as separate statuses. A completed form is not the same as a corrected record. Check important account profiles, expected deliveries, and the next available statement. Follow up on rejected changes or missing confirmations.

Treat each forwarded item as a clue: has that sender received your new address? Add overlooked annual bills to the inventory. Keep the list until important records are confirmed and outstanding tasks have an owner.

Common change of address questions

Who should I notify first when moving?

Prioritize services you need on arrival and records tied to money, identity, health, or a deadline. Utilities, insurance, employers, financial institutions, and applicable government agencies belong near the top. Your individual circumstances determine the order.

Does one address change update everything?

No. Treat forwarding, government records, financial accounts, service addresses, and delivery settings as separate tasks. Check what each organization confirms instead of assuming that connected accounts were updated.

What if I find an old address after moving?

Correct it directly with that organization, check for pending mail or orders, and save confirmation. Add a follow-up task if the change is still processing. A working change of address checklist helps you catch omissions as they appear.
